Round Bathroom
I have a cardboard bowl that I want to dive into a cabinet. How can I cut an opening to fit 5 "deep?
I sure is a trade secret, but can not find. As the basin / sink is not unique and odd way, but also extends, it is almost impossible to determine the size and shape of the opening I need to cut the top of the cabinet. I thought with a mold, but that seems very problematic. There must be a way to describe the midpoint of the basin. Remember the cup is not round or oval, so that it can start with a small opening and increase it gradually the desired depth is reached. Thanks for any advice!
I would start with a bit of legal paper, or part of a paper bag, if its large enough. Trace the outline of the rim of the bowl to the paper. "Ballpark as" the cup at a depth of 5 inches that you want it to be, over the counter. Just get one approximate measure in two directions. If the basin is less than 8.5 x 11 inches – you can take some modern equipment, hehehe …. Remember that track? Take it for a copier and reduce it to the size of their stadium "measurement. Center" shrink "the size stub" full "contour and cut it out. Now you've got a pattern that you can use on your sink top … But just to play it safe … try cutting on a piece of plywood FIRST. Check the fit of the cup on the plywood .. If you like, repeat it on the bench. If not, then you still have the opportunity to adjust your pattern. If basin is larger than a standard sheet of paper, then you can try "free handing" screening, to reduce it to whatever size you need. Just try to keep the lines back to the same distance from the full size of the trace. (this is the place where a "compass" comes in handy … you can buy a the school supplies section of any store. Its got a pencil on one side and a 'pin' on the othe.) Define the distance between the shaft and the tip of the pencil to correspond to the difference in the size you need the full trace for the depth of 5 inches, and then drag the first 'pin' of the compass throughout the length of trace line with the pencil in the trace. This will give a good approximation of the standard you need. Again … experience the model in a piece of plywood first! Now … This is one way to do it. Another option is to actually make a mold … and is not so hard as it seems. Since you do not need a "perfect" mold, but just enough to get a good pattern for a cut, there are some things you will can use. Dap foam (get the 'minimum' stuff expansion, not GreatStuff) Use the plastic wrap over the bowl, put it in a box, and fill the box to mark 5 inches. The bowl lifts easily, because it is attached to the foam (it had the plastic on the outside of it). You may have to hold the cup in place, or weight down, while putting in the foam. Modeling clay! – Have some clay modeling, and apply it to the bowl (again, I would use some plastic wrap to keep the plate clean). Get a good layer of modeling clay around the bowl where you want to be on the bench, then, if necessary, you can add a small piece of wire around it, and continue to build with a little more clay. This will strengthen the mold of clay, and allow you to lift it out of bowl, and transfer some form of paper or thin plywood to make a model. Drywall mud! – Once again, even with some plastic to keep the bowl clean … apply mud drywall outside the basin, the level that you want to buried at the top. Let dry and repeat. Never put too much at once. You can use the same technique with plaster. In I think the quickest and easiest way is with the copier, providing its basin is small enough for that. When you know you have the right size model (remember, you should test the model in plywood first!), then you can prepare to cut the bench. Like to use some painter tape, and put some tape where I was going to cut the hole. (The tape will help keep the laminate from chipping off, and is easy to remove later) Trace the pattern onto the tape, and use a drill to start a hole. The drill should be as large as the saw blade that we use to cut the hole. I would use a jigsaw or sawing, cutting the bench. Take your time. If this is a small bowl, a jig saw will be easier to use. Dry fit the bowl. If you like it – Remove the tape. Apply a small amount of construction adhesive to the 'edge' of the bench (and not the surface of the top) This will help hold the cup in place. If you intend remove it occasionally, then do not use construction adhesive. You can finish it by applying a small amount of caulk around the edge of the counter / Cup to seal it, and make it leakproof. I would suggest a tube type squeeze the caulk, if you do not mind being white or almonds, hehehehe. This type of caulk will clean up with water … stay away from silicone caulk. Have Fun!
